I'm going to give it try. Got the pits dug and lined them with old hay. Plenty of corn stubble to hide everything.

It does sound like your u-joints/shaft will need replacing. Until then, try Justice Brothers (JB) penetrant. The stuff smells nasty, but does a great job with rusty things and provides good lubrication.
