My cousins good friends kid (18) went out yesterday for the very 1st time deer hunting. he shot a small racked 8 pt (170 live weight) 1st thing in the AM. Talk about beginners luck!
The deer knew something was wrong and had turned to look around a tree so the tree blocked the vitals, he shot it in the neck from 30yds away with a shotgun.
I get the calls from my cousin - please help him out as he does not know what to do and I'm and his dad are at work. So I get over there and guided him how to gut a deer properly, letting him do the majority of the gutting.
It was a good day as I got to help another person out. 8-)

BTW, someone, shot the arrow a bit high earlier in the season... as there was a 3" inch long () shaped wound on its back. Makes me wonder if the arrow hit a twig or they shot at it running as the wound was mid back, Vs 1/3 of the way point.

Nice.

se mn was absolutely terrible this weekend, not sure what the deal was. It rained from Sat 12 pm through last night which didn't help. And tons of standing corn. But even on the game camera I set there was good movement through about Halloween then dried up.

Curious if they are locked down in the corn, zero chasing observed by anyone and no mature bucks seen.

I may sneak out locally for a day or two this week before going back down friday

My uncle got the one I was after with shotgun.

Time for plan B. Fill my doe tag with muzzleloader.

Bad pic. But never set a game camera out where we hunt in SE MN before. Some nice bucks walk through. Doesn't mean much for my particular spot as it's more of a travel corridor he may never be back, but fun to see

Fun to see the body size/age difference in the pic you posted vs Fowler’s pic.

I'm struggling with this one if it's just a bad angle, or if he's really that old and scraggly and past prime

Irritating. I hit a big one 2 times this morning, could tell it was hurt bad but he didn't go down he just slowly moved off, tail down. I could still see him for like 10 min after I shot, barely moving. Gave him over 2 hrs before even looking for blood.

Found the blood trail and 2 separate spots he bedded down within 100 yards of my stand. Proceeded to track him for probably half mile, finding more spots he bedded down and blood the whole way the last 4 hrs. Eventually just lost where he made his next move.

I hate injuring a deer and having it get away like that, hopefully someone else can put him down
