223 vs 22-250

Wed Dec 03, 2014 10:16 am

Well guys I'm going to pull the trigger on a new Yote rifle.
Now I just have to choose between a 223 or 22-250. I always wanted a 22-250 but I hear you can burn up barrels and ammo is not available all the time.

My shots will be less than 200 yards and I want to save the fur.

I know the 223 is a great round, being prior service I know what it can do plus ammo is available all over.

My smallest round I have is a 7mm shortmag and it looks like a brick went through'em after a short recovery.

BTW the rifle I'm looking at is a savage Axis predator package.

I have the savage axis in .223 and have been very happy with it.

I'm no rifle expert but if you're shooting at that range, a .223 should be fine. 22-250 is when you want to extend that range.

200 yards and under i would go with a 204, 220, 17 rem, or one of the other lesser known hide saving calibers. When I used a 22-250 on yotes, anything inside 300 yards wasnt worth skinning after being hit with a hollow point.

I'm no expert, but the Savage Axis II rifle seems like a good deal.

I'm wondering if you may more bullet weight options with the .223. I'm thinking that in a crosswind, the .223 may have an advantage.

You can "burn" a barrel out of any caliber of gun.
Ammo is also all over for the 22-250, just not in the same quantity and price.
Ive also seen dogs that are a mess from a 223 round.
Bolt gun Id go 22-250, semi auto your kinda stuck in 223

New gun update. I had many in my hands and left with a .223 Mossberg MVP varmint tactical with a lighted mill dot.

I hope it shoots as good as it looks. (looks like a bolt action in a AR platform) with a heavy fluted barrel.

What a great sport, I can see me picking up a axis2 in 22-250 very nice gun and trigger as well.

Thanks for all the help
