It all depends on the weather 1 to 2 weeks from now. You never know, because if we get a 4-5 days of below zero it'd freeze 6+" solid again.

A half inch of rain today and a sunny 60 degree day tomorrow. Bring on the open water.

Anybody know how smaller lakes up around longville/Remer are doing? Aiming to head up there Friday. I'm not planning on driving a truck out or anything but hoping my dad's 4 person ranger at the cabin will be fine so I don't have to haul up my wheeler

Places in S IA that had 8" of ice 2 weeks ago they were out in the boat this past Sunday.
Don said on a N IA lake on Sat he had 18" of ice, 2" honey combed and 16" solid. On Sun the same lake he said the all of it was honey combed by the end of the afternoon. :o It's damned spooky when it can go bad that quickly.

If you want a shake your head laugh, search for the NBC news clip of the white Escalade, it had to be like 3" of ice at most over the rock ridge in WI on Sun.

I had places yesterday AM on wetlands before the rain where 3 chisel hits and it went through. :( The MHN are NOT going to all get checked this year unless we get a several days of subzero weather.

MLDS you should have no problem with a Ranger. Plenty of ice up north yet. I plan to drive my Tacoma out this weekend.

If you can get on the ice you don't have any worries assuming you made a good couple of feet to start the season (which the metro did not). The shorelines go first. If you can get on the ice with a vehicle you aren't falling through assuming there no springs or current of course.

Watch out for large holes though. A lot of water drained off the ice after that melt and big rain. I've seen that open up existing ice holes larger than manhole covers and it would certainly ruin your day dropping a tire in one.

Thanks, figured it'd be OK up there but the rate it's going out down here is crazy...Had me a little worried haha. But the cabin is usually 2-3 weeks behind here seems like

We were up the fishing one time during a massive melt and seeing that water cyclone down the ice holes is incredible...Couldn't even fish. Next day it was drained but like you said huge holes everywhere

We didn't find the big schools but got some nice fish. 21" ice on our lake and it was still perfect ice even near shore
