Keeper Walleye?

Thu Jan 30, 2014 10:34 pm

What is your own personal "voluntary slot limit" on walleyes? I've kept fish from 14" to 19" this winter, and let a 22" go tonight.

Usually 16" - 20" for me. Anything over gets a picture and released.

looks like 20" is the typical top of the charts for keepers. The guy I was fishing with says he keeps nothing over 18".

I would venture to say 80% of the walleyes (not including dinks) I catch are from 17.5-19.5.

It depends on if male or female. This time of year one can usually tell. Males to 3lbs.. Females anything over 18"

How, exactly?

There's no way to be sure without sticking a knife in one.

I'll kill all of them. Size doesn't matter.

3"-19.5" for most of ours. Slot is 19.5 -28". Never keep over 28. If I know it is a fat egg filled female I tend to turn them loose this time of year.

14-18 regardless of slot on the lake. 15-17 if they are snapping. I wish more folks had personal slots on other species like panfish and trout.

Legal (15") to about 19-20.
Ask Al how to successfully nest wood ducks, see you next season.
