Use both Ion electric and Jiffy Pro 4 propane

Ion
pro- lightweight, quiet, no fumes
con - keeping battery warm, drills slower, replacement battery is spendy

Jiffy
pro- quicker drilling, doesn't catch on ice
con - I hate having 1lb tanks around, keeping propane cylinder upright

Neither need to have gas which is great. I will not buy a gas auger for many reasons.

Buddy won an Eskimo in a fishing contest but dont know if he likes it.

Fumes? Hassle to start?

I've just seen that the Eskimo Shark has a 51 CC engine and the same warranty as Jiffy's carry, but is at least $100 cheaper.

I don't fish a ton.... Well until this year. I've sufficed with a hand auger until now. Well, until last night when my hand auger bent when I approached the 30" ice mark....

Need to upgrade.

I hear ya on the hand auger situation. I still use one a lot of the time until the ice this year. There is so much more to deal with with gas augers. Maintenance, cleaning up for offseason, gas, oil, fumes in a permanent, can be a hassle to start and dirtier are some things I can think of.

Have a Jiffy Stealth STX auger, probably only complaint is it's very cold blooded, but it does cut very good...............

If a person could keep the ethanol gas out of them, they're a lot better......

Like the looks of the ION, but like GWH said, I've heard the batteries are big $$$, probably a good auger for the guys with the big houses, no gas fumes......

Considering giving even the cheap Eskimo Stingray a try... under $275 bucks.

Their powerful model "Shark" is only $350 in an 8" model...

I've considered it numerous times as well before. Let us know how you like it if you go with one of them.

My little brother has had his Model 30 for I bet close to 20 years or more and still cuts like a champ....

I'm a hand auger guy...and can tell you that the Lazer blades cut ice like butter with little effort and are well worth the extra cash. I know that some of the power models come with Lazer blades and would think that they would be worth looking at. I've never used a Nils....but have talked to folks who have and they swear by them...they have power options as well.
