Plucking ducks

Tue Dec 03, 2013 9:49 pm

Does anyone still do it? I plucked a couple of the big mallards this year for something different, cooked them in the nu wave. Boy they we're good. I had them once in an orange marmalade and wish I could get that recipe.

Anyway, anyone still pluck ducks?

I never have but I always wanted to. What's te best way to go about it? Is it the same as a chicken I assume. Dunk it in hot water then start plucking.

Plucked a few and smoked em. Damn they was good but that was a lot of work. One of them was filled with pin feathers.

Pluck quite afew mallards later in the season and pluck the BTW's in early season, the BTW is the easiest duck to pluck, usually put 2 mallards in a throw away tin foil pan and put a couple apples in the cavity of the ducks, toss abunch of onions around them and add 1-2 cans of chicken broth, seal container up with tin foil and cook on low all day, very good eating.....

When I hunt with Bigdog we pluck the birds...when I hunt alone I usually just breast them. It works out well for me because it gives me a lot of options for cooking the birds.

Why don't people pluck their birds? I understand in the early season with young, pinny birds, but you get a much better final product when cooking since the duck fat is rendered into the meat. It takes a little more time but it makes you feel a little better about not wasting much of the bird. Just my opinion. I probably end up plucking around 85% of the ducks I shoot. The exception is early season geese which all get breasted and legged.
