Fall is my favorite season and as excited as I am for it, I am never in a rush to get through a Minnesota summer. Cold fronts getting down to the 40's at night are supposed to happen in early September, not early August.

One river you will guess with one guess, another is the Mississippi, and the last is the one on which I live which flows into the Prairie which flows into the 'ssippi. I should add that I've seen decent rice on the typical spots on the Prairie as well.

Saw first family flight of mallards last evening. Sunsets on the lake are about to get good.

I've seen a couple teal broods kicking around the South West metro which surprised me, don't recall seeing them in 17 breeding seasons down here

Also seemed an uptick in Woodies and hooded mergs.

Don't want to get excited about flyway breeding success based on local observations, but have to admit I'm hopeful.

Might try to bust up to Fergus a night earlier just to work on the boat and have more country time.

After a friend got his new (to him) glock 19 sighted I pulled out the heavies. 12 g and buck and the .45. Put a new target up and did some mag dumps to burn off the off season funk. The pic with the hand is my 30 yard 4 buck pattern. Hate to be a coyote at 30 yards.

Other than this its been mushroom hunting and now some dove scouting to pass the days till the metal meets the meat. ImageImageImage

Last night I was thinking, storms must be incoming with the clouds as it was getting darker outside at 8. Nope just getting dark earlier now, SS is 8:33...

Woke up this morning thinking about past duck seasons..... The last few years I've seen a lot of birds. Had some stellar and stellar bad shoots. Weather being the single biggest factor. Somewhere between too much sun, too much rain and not enough wind.

I love a low ceiling on partly clouded skies with 10-15 mph. A "duck day" with some precip is good also. But I'd have to say my most consistent "best days" have been more calmish right before/at freeze up... busting some ice, banging birds.

Favorite morning weather to hunt ducks: Sunny, NE wind at 10-15 crisp.
