In need of some serious deep penetrating lubricant

Fri Nov 29, 2013 9:22 pm

I bet that caught your attention!

Serious though, the u-joints on my steering shaft look like this:

And they are starting to bind up when turning, I already mistakenly replaced the power steering pump trying to solve my issue. Oddly enough, it helped for about a week then things were right back to what felt like lack of power steering.

I soaked both u-joints (there's one at the top and another at the bottom of the shaft) in wd40, then applied about a can of liquid wrench and things went completely back to normal... for a while.

Seems like the liquid wrench wears out pretty quick now that it's getting colder, requiring me to re-apply every other time I drive it (which isn't often). Does anyone have a better recommendation? I want to try and avoid replacing the shaft until it warms up again, truck wont fit in my garage and I'm choosing to be a baby about the cold now.

If there are no grease zerks then your only real option is to replace them in my opinion

Anything short of replacement will be temporary. You could get some aerosol grease and try and pull the seal lip back. Shoot it in.

It reminds me of the old lady in the nursing home when asked about the quality of the food, said most of it is pretty good but the Kentucky Jelly is pretty awful.

If that doesn't work, maybe try dry lubricants like graphite lubricant?

 thanks for holding back

Just trying to prolong the inevitable, the lower steering shaft assembly is dealer part only and runs about $250. If I can spend $20 to get me through the winter (or at least after Christmas) I'm happy

Try a salvage yard, they will have your part cheap, just be sure to inspect it before you pay for it!
