If you like to laugh as you read, then Patrick McManus has a bunch of books he's put out that are entertaining. He would write the column at the back of I believe field and stream or outdoor life, which was cheers and jeers or something to that nature (I know, informative aren't I).

I also enjoy the Gordon MacQuarrie books. He bases his out of northern WI so it's pretty close to home minus being in the 1940s. He is pretty entertaining as well, but the 3rd and 4th book are expensive to find. I'm currently reading The Wings Of Dawn by George Reiger which is more of a history book, but I like to learn about that old stuff.

'Autumn Passages' put out by Ducks Unlimited is the best compilation of duck hunting stories out there. It's a 'who's who' of duck hunting authors over the past 150 years. Some of the greats can get stale throughout a whole book (Buckingham in particular is akin to reading Shakespeare in terms of writing style during his era to now), but for only a story that represents their best work it helps the pages turn. 'Autumn Passages' is a great starting point if you're new to duck hunting literature.

Like for most, MacQuarrie is my favorite with Gene Hill a close second.

'A Wildfowler's Quest' by George Reiger is a dark horse favorite. He was the conservation editor for Field & Stream for decades but was extremely under appreciated during his time and still is. I never see him get mentioned for some reason. His book was great. I seem to pick it up every few years and reread it in a few days and always enjoy it as much as I did the first time.

I would suggest as a starting point for book titles, the bibliography from George Rieger's book, "The Wings of Dawn". Otherwise, here is the list of books that I have in my Library, including over 50 years of the Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, all issues of Wildfowl and Waterfowler's World, all the newsletters and magazines of the Minnesota Waterfowl Association. Hunting is for the birds... by Bill Weber its about a guys travels all over the US and Canada hunting some of the most prestiges camps around... in the 1940's
