Damn, green grass and you can still see its ribs sticking out. One has to wonder what it looked like a month ago. And how many perished. BTW, meteorologists said this was the worst winter since 83/84. And yet the DNR only used a part of the deer food fund. Why the heck was it not all used to help feed the deer?

Because feeding deer is stupid and pointless. Deer have survived for millions of years without humans feeding them.

Most of the deer that were going to perish during winter died 2012-13. With the population reduction from two winters ago, there were fewer deer in the same habitat, so not only was there more food for each deer, but the weak had already dropped out of the competition.

I saw very few skinny deer this winter and many folks who live up north year round commented how the body condition of individual deer was much better than last year. And that has nothing to do with MDHA sprinkling pellets in the snow. All that did was make it easier for the wolves.

I was surprised to see lots of deer, most looked pretty skinny like this one. This is in NW MN in prime wolf country. 5 wolves have been taken in the last 2 years within 5 miles of where this picture was taken.

Fowler....feeding deer? Really? You should stick with waterfowl stuff where you actually have some knowledge.

My point was simply why did not the DNR make all the $ available since the deer hunters pay 50 cents a year for each license for the deer feeding fund? The DNR did not let any of the $ go for 12/13 feeding. Why is the DNR not using the money as intended? Why was the DNR so resistant to it --remember a decade or so back when the legislature had to pass a law forcing the DNR to dole out $700K of the deer fund $. My point is something smells awfully fishy when a dedicated fund is not being used as intended.
