This good ol boy driving by saw what was going on and he asked if he could wade out into the mud to feel for snapper with his feet...and he did... crazy bastard
I’m no expert on snapper habits. Just lots of experiences messin with em. Based on my encounters If it’s head is out of water or partially submerged you are in danger of getting chomped. If under water you’re safe. I’ve stepped on a bunch of em and in front of their snout under water. I’ve picked em up out of water and never had issues. That crazy bastard fishing around with his toes for snappers may have known what he was doing.
I’d see a big one on the road as a kid and head down with my buddies and see how big of a stick they could snap by putting it in front of their snout. Grew up on a lake and had a pond out back with a long gravel road in between. Lots of turtles hatched off our road. Good times.
