Hahahaha…..

I was a member of that sham for 2yrs back in 13/14 I think right when they were first getting their feet under them. Still get emails asking me to “join the fight” which of course means come to our pint nights wearing either a) designer flannel or b) first lite clothes and then we can talk about how rugged we are.

I’m not true a BHA hater, cause I do appreciate support for our public lands but also they’re very easy to make fun of. the stereotypes are true.

Like I’ve only been calling them Backdoor hunters and anglers for the past two years at least.

Bad ass! Are you going somewhere and specifically targeting catfish or was it a random when fishing for something else?

What did it bite on?

The ones I've caught ice fishing have all been when I'm going after crappies (I've only caught a handful) have all been on a jigging spoon....buckshot or forage minnow....tipped with a minnow head. They were up in the column around halfway fishing from depths of 22' to 36' and I thought I was setting the hook on a crappie until it felt like a brick. On all of them except one maybe two I had to get the fish to come back and take it again, and it usually being on the third or fourth try when I got lucky and caught the corner of the mouth. Otherwise when vertically jigging them....it's a lot different than throwing a weight out to sit on the bottom with a hook and some bait like on the river. Their teeth pads are a bitch.....impossible front what I've seen to get a hook through so unless you hit the corner....no dice.

If you have any tips for targeting them I'm all ears.....

I’ve caught cats out of this spot in the past but I was actually targeting crappies. Watched a few thousand cats swim by on the livescope and only caught the one during the day. Went back last night for a couple hours and there were a lot less around but they were more bitey and we caught six and had a big one bust me off. Drag was froze from fishing outside all day. Biggest we caught was about 7 lbs. and we kept the small ones. Bite was super light and we missed a lot. I swear they are just feeling your bait with their whiskers some times. They didn’t seem too bait picky as long as it glowed bright and had minnow chunks.

Anyone try crawlers in the winter? Might give em a shot.

I love eating cold water cats. Best white meat freshwater fish. We did a fish fry at my house and everyone preferred the cats over crappie.
