DNR hosts event on Mille Lacs walleye reproduction

Wed Aug 27, 2014 7:48 am

Who would go to this? I fish Mille Lacs and work close to where this is being held. I could even hit a happy hour for a few before showing up....yet you couldn't pay me to go to something like this.

What's the goal here?

NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. — The Department of Natural Resources hosts a public discussion Thursday about walleye reproduction in Mille Lacs Lake.

The presentation and discussion will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the New Brighton Community Center at 400 10th St. NW .

The DNR says the "Hooked on Mille Lacs" event is intended to share biological information and answer citizens' questions related to past, present and future walleye reproduction in one of Minnesota's most popular fisheries.

Fisheries managers are trying to gain a better understanding of why Mille Lacs' walleye population is at a 40-year-low. A major problem is the vast majority of hatchlings don't survive to their second autumn.

The DNR has imposed tight regulations to try to help the walleye population recover, but recently lifted a night fishing ban.

The fry are dying because they are:

1) being eaten by zebra mussels

2) are being caught in gill nets

3) are being stung by spiny water fleas

4) have low survival rate after being returned to the water after being caught and released

There, just saved you an hour.

Now that the perch had a stellar hatch the baby walleyes will survive because they won't be target number 1 on the big walleyes menu. Fishing will likely be tough for awhile because the walleyes are full on perch so the walleye crash discussions will continue. Once things balance out the fishing will pick back up, the DNR will realize the baby walleyes are surviving and they will post a report claiming credit for saving Mille Lacs.

step 1 - go to devils lake (or any other lake infested with walleye)
setp 2 - catch walleye until it gets nice and boring
step 3 - return to mille lacs with the walleye bug out of your system
step 4 - fish that lake for the real monsters

All you guys have to do is Boycott any lake that allows gill netting by the tribes and refuse to have them stock it. Make the tribes stock there own lakes they net in. Instead of paying to restock it letting them gillnet the chit out of it and then going and buying more walleye. Which chances are we in some how are buying from the tribes to begin with.

Mille Lacs has never been stocked with walleyes. Ever.

Besides Red, which lake has been gill netted to the point of needing to be restocked?
