Amazon Announces Prime Air Drone Delivery

Mon Dec 02, 2013 11:05 am

We're excited to share Prime Air — something the team has been working on in our next generation R&D lab. The goal of this new delivery system is to get packages into customers' hands in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles. Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations.

The first time I saw this video, I thought it was a publicity spoof. After further research, it appears it's real. Probably only coming to select markets, and who knows if 30 minutes is real (What happens when it's raining?)

Here's the 60 minutes bit: http://www.cbs.com/shows/60_minutes/vid ... -12-01-13/

I'm particularly interested in this as I've been thinking about building one of these myself. Just think of the scouting you could do with your own little drone!

I'd still stay on the "stunt" side. There might be some use for commercial reasons, but the Feds will step in and kibosh the whole thing. Although, knowing Amazon, they got a patent on "thing that flies for the purpose of delivery with no living pilot", so they might have the direct drone delivery market locked up.
