FARGO, N.D. — A small group of Catholic nuns dedicated to eliminating the death penalty is working to spare the life of a man convicted of kidnapping and killing a University of North Dakota student.

The Congregation of St. Joseph is an order of about a dozen nuns in Crookston, Minn., which is the hometown of Alfonso Rodriguez Jr.

Rodriguez is on death row at a federal prison for the 2003 killing of Dru Sjodin, of Pequot Lakes, Minn.


Sister Pat Murphy tells KFGO radio she has never talked publicly about the death penalty and realizes her opinion is unpopular, even within her own family.

Murphy has written letters to U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson, who sentenced Rodriguez to death. Erickson's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When you asked what was wrong with the Catholic Church, I def didn't expect this when I opened this thread. I mean of all the things...

No surprise really.... The Catholic church has defended and protected the pedophile priests for years, so what's the surprise that they defend a killer that defiled a young woman too?
And I 2nd the "why is this guy even breathing"? He should have been executed 10 years ago.

Well, the Church's position is more along the lines of: can't save babies the abortion mill if you're going to fry the bad one's in a chair.

My prison knowledge is based off Orange is the New Black, but aren't rapist/killers supposed to get shived in prison?

Sister Murphy is acting upon her strong personal convictions despite the adversity it presents. I wonder how many others of her faith agree with or support her.

I don't agree with her at all, but I do salute her passion for following her heart.

Rodriquez should have been fried and his ashes used as fertilizer....at least he would have given something useful back to society.
