April 15, 2015 - 1:17 PM
A Polk County man was stabbed to death Tuesday night after an argument between fishermen along the banks of the St. Croix River escalated.
A running, three-hour argument between two groups of fishermen on the St. Croix River ended in tragedy Tuesday night when a man was stabbed to death at Interstate Park in St. Croix Falls, Wis.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation began about 6:30 p.m. when two men who live in Polk County, Wis. were fishing on the Minnesota side of the river. At some point, the men began arguing with three fishermen on the opposite riverbank.
The verbal dispute continued over the next several hours, then escalated when the two men fishing on the Minnesota side of the river crossed to confront the others about 9:45 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
A “brief physical confrontation” ensued, and one of the men from Polk County was stabbed with a knife.
The victim, from St. Croix Falls, has not been identified. He died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
On Tuesday, authorities were asking for the public’s help in finding the three men, who fled the scene. They are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s.
All are believed to be friends who traveled together, but in two separate vehicles — one a blue Chevrolet pickup truck with a Tonneau-style cover, the other a small- to midsize passenger car. Both had Minnesota license plates.
Two of the three fled in the car. The other, accompanied by a dog — either a golden retriever, yellow lab or similar breed — named Gunner, left in the pickup truck.
Authorities also are seeking the public’s help in trying to identify a group of five people who were not involved in the incident but may have witnessed the argument.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff’s Department at 715-485-8300.
