Ordering carpet, what do you pay for?

They are charging by the square foot.

The installer wants to get paid by what is ordered.

I want to pay for how many square feet the job is.

Is it fair for them to charge me a install fee on the carpet waste they do not install.

Trying to squeak by as funds are tight!

My parents re-did a bunch of carpet last winter and it was installed by the sq. footage laid.

Call me a sucker, but I had empire do my basement. I can look at the invoice when I get home, but I'm pretty sure I paid for material per sq ft and the install was a fixed price per room.

You are going to pay the installer for the amount of material ordered unless you purposely order extra. You can also expect to pay extra for stairs and rollover edge.

I am looking for a good carpet guy as I install carpet about twice a year at our various rental properties.
1. First guy was incredible - then he retired.
2. Second guy was one of my tenants - a union guy. I bought the carpet through his employer. He did a shitty job and didn't pay his rent.
3. Home Depot Contractor intentionally over estimated amount of carpet needed. Didn't tighten the carpet sufficiently and wanted to charge me $150 to fix it.
4. Fourth guy was an arrogant SOB. I worked with him for a while, but last time I ordered extra for the stairs so I could do that later and he wanted to charge me for that material. He also wanted to charge me extra for waiting around when he showed up 1.5 hours early without calling.

So far all three guys who bid it have said that I will have to pay the installer how much is ordered not the actually sq footage.

Can some of you guys who said you only pay what the sq footage is PM me or post up who only charges by the area laid?

Thanks

Its been 8 years since I was running jobs. Don't remember the companies we used. I could call the owner of the company I worked for but he is dead so don't think ill be able to get that info from him.
