Weapon against mussels in Christmas Lake "successful"

Experimental weapon against invasive mussels in Christmas Lake ‘successful’
April 20, 2015 By Declan Desmond, BMTN

When state officials deployed Zequanox (an experimental product designed to kill off a highly invasive aquatic species) in Christmas Lake last fall, the scientist who developed it boldly said it would make history.

Seven months later, it appears he may have been right.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced Monday that a three-step treatment process starting with the use of Zequanox apparently rid the lake of an infestation of zebra mussels.

According to a news release from the DNR, a week of searches by dive teams turned up no sign of the mussels in the Shorewood-area lake, where the invasive muss was found last year.

Brought to you by Al h2ofwlr's Bring Me Rick Kupchella's Bring Me The News

If they got the deal contained, good deal. I'm not holding my breath for this to be the end, or for the treatment to work whole water body. May end up like milfoil treatment, just add it in and keep it the zebus knocked back a bit. Would gladly be wrong on this, but our history of managing invasives is against us.

It would be nice if they got it, but my guess is they are just gonna be keeping it in a continual lag phase where it's in a lake but not exploded yet.

No way they got them all. There were veligers floating throughout the lake. They might have got the adults but they didn't get the spawn.

They'd have to carpet bomb all of Douglas county with that stuff to make a dent.

If costly treatments that provide nothing but false hope are a step in the right direction then I agree.

Well if you can catch it at the early stages like they did at Christmas lake, it may end up as a early treatment that works. Is it a cure all, definitely not. But like I said a step in the right direction to find an effective way to treat them.

And I understand that it'd only delay the inevitable. We've all seen it so many times, from the heart worm spread, to zebra muscles and milfoil, to purple loose strife, and buck thorn to even tumble weeds, to Russian cattails to Elm disease to Ash borer, the new jumping Silver carp and the old carp, sea Lampreys, etc.. etc.. in the end foreign species do take over. :(

But explain it to the kids in years to come of why we did not even try to to contain the spread of Zebra muscles. And if we do not try, we know the end result.

Can't. Fowlers hoarding it all.
