Are trumpeters still considered endangered?

Nevermind. I googled it. They are a species of concern in MN. I wonder what the target population in the state is though because a MN swan hunt would be better than the wolf hunt.

Are they still feeding them up in Monticello? If not it might be why we are seeing more. They have had to disperse out to other open water spots to winter to find food.

Tuesday morning. -30*F. Drove past the outlet of Lake Bemidji and saw a dozen swans loafing on the open water / edge of ice.

Where the hell did they come from that Bemidji, on a -30* day, was a better option?!

I wonder what they feed on when it's that cold out?

I have seen Mallards do that too but do you really think a swan would? That would be pretty surprising. My guess is they find somewhere where they can get at some weeds.

They will feed in Monticello through March. They are fed 1500 - 2000 pounds of corn per day. A few years back they tried weaning the swans off the corn hoping they would disperse, but it didn't happen and they restarted the feeding when the swans got sickly. It's a pretty amazing site. I recommend stopping by the park or viewing them from the private deck of the neighbor ($10/hr) if you are interested. There are also an estimated 1000 ducks and 1000 geese there.

Stop all feeding in the spring--none over the summer, fall or next winter and they will disperse.

I wonder what the bacteria count is like down river from all those ducks, geese and swans ?
