Spring Chronicles....

Sun Mar 04, 2018 4:01 pm

I'm not traveling this Spring, so my view will be more localized to the homestead in the SW metro.

Mating flight warm ups for mallards we're heavy starting last week over MN Valley Refuge with migrating swans and Canadas arriving mid-week.

Gimp seeing snows in Redwood Falls area, and of FB saw a report of cranes already.

In the Fall Hunter Survey, DNR was interested in feedback about potential crane seasons..... Hoping they become an option Statewide.

Walked the dog in a thunderstorm this morning that involved rain/sleet/ice.... that pretty much sucked ass.

Open water on the brain, damn near pulled the boat out today to start prep, but forecast for +/- 5" snow tomorrow was a reality check.

Taxes first, then on to the finish side of life.

I heard cranes and killdeer in southeast MN last week. The robins showed up yesterday afternoon. Had 30 to 40 in the backyard at one point. Sounds like quite a few cranes along the Mississippi yesterday.

I saw a loon on a river near my house this weekend. I think he is lost. By far the earliest I've seen a loon.

Swans showed up at the end of February. Also very early.

Smelled a skunk on the way to work last week. I wonder if he saw his shadow.

Lakes have 2 feet of snow on them and are a slush nightmare. Should help get my fatass in shape chasing the late ice bite.

A friend was up ice fishing by Winnie and came across a hen ringer floping in the snow...would never believe it if he didn’t have a few snap chats of it. That was last week also.

Can't tell how much shit we got here... Blowing and drifting has it scattered, guessing 6"-8" average in Chanhassen.

With the temps not getting out of the 30's this week looks like we're on time delay for Spring.

At least 8" of snow in prior lake. Before the snow I saw several robins. I drove to Rochester over the weekend, I saw geese from Rosemount to Roch plus lots of ducks in the fields as well.

Got a drive down 169 from Cities to Windom. ... Probably 1,000 birds today.

500 or so SOBs around St James, some mergs, flocks if geese and a big group of egrets outside Jordan if I spied the right.
