Opener

Fri Sep 23, 2022 9:05 pm

Good luck tomorrow all you hard core waterfowlers.
I am sleeping in until later in the season. Too old Togo out at O’’dark thirty to sleep in the boat for “The Spot” only to have two groups come in at 10 Mn to shooting time and set up 50 yds from me.
I am getting to be an old fart for sure.!

Good luck. I got the spot ready today which has been less than ideal last several years but is what it is. Old discolored decoys, blind less than optimally camouflaged. I don't expect much these days. Dog and I will go try anyway.

Opener for me is hitting a private spot that sucks or going out west to a shitty public nobody else wants to walk to. Sometimes I do good. Sometimes I don’t.

Sat we were fogged in, I never raised the gun, saw a couple birds. Sun we had 4 opportunities within range, very little flying. Almost saw more swans than ducks.
Heard little shooting and saw no rigs on 94 for the hours drive NW on Sat and Sun morning.
Last year on same spot, which I've hunted for 40 years, my buddies limited. West central area.

It was as good as ever. I had to work...so getting off at 5am kinda sucks and had a late start. But...easily killed a limit both days this weekend. Still a shitliad of BWT around, and a fair number of birds that aren't typically around for a few more weeks. A lot of pintails and wigeon around the area I hunted Saturday, a quite a few very distinguishable drakes. Definitely not normal for our opener.

Mine sucked as always but instead of sucking on public land I went to an easy private spot.

Better days ahead!

I’m a huge fan of easy private spots on opener, even if they suck. You didn’t get skunked, that counts for a lot.

Great opener this year! Ended with 18 ducks Saturday. Fog hurt us or would have had a few more. Sunday didn't want to do.the long walk back into the spot so set up on a small hayfield for geese and shot a 3 man limit of geese. Today decided to set a big goose spread for migrators and Killed 6 and a band so not a bad weekend.
