Can Dogs Smell Cancer/Illnesses

Thu Dec 01, 2022 1:43 am

Been doing a lot of reading on this and it's pretty fascinating

Obviously I'm his owner so I'm biased. But think my dog has a pretty incredible sense of smell. From hunting to smelling the gfs period to stopping from a full sprint on our runs to grab a chicken bone someone tossed out the window...he is always using his nose

He's intact so he's sometimes aggressive towards other males. He's very alpha despite his size. I have no doubt he'd go up against anything threatening his parents

Gfs parents had a male yellow lab. He was fixed so not as much a threat. But our lab would sniff and lick that yellows genitals in whatt can be described as a "loving" way. He was never once aggressive towards that male...never tried to rough house with him etc always gentle. And has never licked another male dogs genitalia before. Or since...but he was fixated on that dog.

Well that dog died of cancer a year ago.

Could be complete coincidence. And that I think too highly of my dog. But his demeanor towards that dog was very different than other run ins with male dogs. It could be that that dog was part of the "family" we'd typically go see. Or the fact that yellow went along to pick him up from the breeder

Any of y'all have stories of dogs seemingly being able to detect cancer/illnesses in people or other dogs?

I think you’re trying to cope with the fact that your dog is gay.

If the dog had cancer, why was it only smelling its empty ball bag? The GF Parents dog was his true love. That's why he doesn't sniff any other dogs ball bags anymore.

If he was a human, he would be taking many trips to Thailand, and not for the beaches.

From what Ive read, cancer can give off a different odor to urine that dogs can pick up on. I dunno just kinda interesting reading into

I feel like if he is super alpha like you say, and smelled cancer, he would sense the weakness and use that to bully and subordinate the other dog, and not “play nice.”

I think the the GFs parents dog was a “special” friend.

I’m mostly just giving you sh1t btw.

I think it’s pretty wild they can sense seizures and allergic reactions before they happen.

And they definitely know when you’re tripping.

Bro they can see it in your eyes. A dog watches your eyes in ways other domesticated animals don’t.
