I get it tho, Here my dumbazz is sitting deerless cause I didn’t wanna shoot a doe with two fawns this morning.

Tomorrow morning I may not feel so generous.

Nothing wrong with that. Have I done it, yeah. As I get older, I'm more prone to not do it.

Know why I don’t want to shoot a doe? More meat on a buck on the stupid deer culture says I’m cooler if I shoot a buck. And I only have one tag. Now I wish I’d have shot the last doe I saw today but I had a bunch of decent bucks on camera. All of which had more meat than the does and fawns I chose not to shoot. If I had time and spare tags I’d love to pile up some deer.

That much more meat on a 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 yo buck than a mature doe? I don't think so. Honestly, I dont really care anymore what people shoot. This state will never be what it could be for mature bucks having the firearms season when we do. Just another reason I can't wait to move!

Ya I don't really care what other people do anymore, in my property at least I try to grow and hold big ones. Down here...we don't have exclusive access to the property, half the group is 65 years old who knows how many seasons they have left let them have fuun

I passed up an 8 ptt last night with a rack similar to the ones I posted...but was fun doe passed by tgen heard the grunting got ready sure enough he was about 40 yards behind. Walked within 20 yards

The woods was definitely on fire this weekend was probably best buck movement on opener in 4-5 years

Having the gun season during the rut is honestly the one thing the DNR does right. Their job is to give us our wildlife in the best means possible for harvesting it. Hunting deer should be done when they're the easiest to hunt and most vulnerable....the focus of the deer hunting season should be on killing deer....not letting a bunch walk so trophy hunters can have more opportunity. That argument was the same one used by duck hunters who claimed to want the season later so they could shoot fully plumed out and pretty looking "ice ducks." The same argument used against having a teal season.....

....the DNR's job is to give us our wildlife when it's best suited for us to harvest it.

With that being said, I don't think moving the gun season outside the rut would change anything. The biggest reason why "too many" bucks get shot in this state?

"Too many" hunters.

Give it twenty years and there'll be big bucks everywhere. In a couple decades there'll be half or less the deer hunters there are now. 500,000 down to 250,000....then 200,000.....before we're dead we'll probably see when deer hunters in this state don't need six digits to count them.....i.e. fewer than a hundred grand.

Big bucks will be common then. The issue that causes such a small percentage of bucks to make it to maturity isn't when the season is held....but how many people are out afield shooting deer.

Give it a little time.....all it's going to take to fix that problem is a little time.....then once there's a fraction of the hunters there's only going to be a fraction of the deer killed and big bucks will be aplenty.

I'm not sure what people's fascination is with horns in general. People don't go to fancy restaurants to look at horns....they'll go to Manny's and plunk down a couple hundred for a steak though.....

A deer's value is in the meat.

A head mount might be the ugliest thing anyone could put on their wall. I like antler mounts.....smallest plaque/base possible and then just the rack.....that's all that's being shown off anyways on a head mount....no one ever goes, "ooh wow...look at how great they tucked the lips."

If me and someone else connected on and both had a bullet in a booner and were equally responsible for bringing it down....and then given the choices of either getting to keep the rack or the meat?

I'd be eating backstraps with one less thing on my wall collecting dust.

I have no problem with guys being trophy hunters, so long as they never lose sight of the reason why mankind ever began hunting

Well since this is the only active thread at the moment and FF just posted…

FF- did you enter any designs for the new state flag or state seal? Would love to see your submissions!

Excellent point. I still don't like the gun season when it is, but I think I just don't like the gun season in general because so many idiots participate in it. Guys that hunt 2-4 days a year total, don't sight in their guns, take stupid shots, get wasted the night before and just have no respect for the animals. I can't stand that. Anyway, working on getting my 10 yo daughter her first deer now. Got close yesterday. So fun hunting with her! I'll wait till muzzy season to hunt.

Preach! It always amazes me that when i ask people before they go out on their hunt if they sighted in their gun or checked it since the last year and many of times its no. That blows my mind. You put all the work in to putting up stands waking up early and all the other ins and outs and you dont take the couple hours to go check your gun to make sure the scope wasnt bumped after you tossed it in the corner from the year before. Sure its kind of a pain and not that fun but go take a couple shots and make sure you're good.

I cant wait for my daughter to get a few years older and get her out hunting more. She is 4 and wanted to go duck hunting this year so i brought her out once and she really liked it. She always helps with bagging meat and processing bear, moose and deer and helping out with making european mounts.

Agreed on all the yahoos who just hunt opener, while also being conscious of our group being at least half comprised of that kind of hunter. For them it's more about the opener as an event....reason to see old friends and hangout for a weekend away from the wives. It's more about the social aspects than the hunting aspects. I get it, but it's gotten to the point where I think we should have our group's opener be on second weekend. Hunt the public stuff first weekend if guys are hellbent on going and rest the 80 acres of private and then have our same opener shit show second weekend after the ground has been rested and we've pressured the deer on the nearby public to move to our private ground.

We did this with trout opener actually for a while....got sick of bad weather, crowds, and moved our trout opener back a week....better chance of decent weather and no one wading through your hole. Etc.

The weekend hunting in my area sucked. I didn't see shit, most guys didn't, we got two does...the only two deer seen. The traffic around my brother's land must have been at least ten times higher than normal starting on aboot Thursday. Deer aren't stupid....I think they realize they need to sit tight and not move that weekend. Everyone I talked to....and I talked to a bunch of people....went to the casino Saturday night and talked to at least a half dozen different groups.....no one saw or shot shit. I didn't see any deer in trucks or on trailers....I'm very confident it was a bad opener in general in my area.

What's weird is we heard ten times the shooting, which is very confusing. I think it's dudes who hunt once a year getting bored and wanting to shoot their gun....stumps and dirt clumps beware. All in all weird opener. I hunted yesterday and saw deer, had a decent buck at the bottom of the hill under my stand yesterday....heard him grunting before I saw him. I was able to make him out with the naked eye but it was fifteen minutes after legal and I couldn't make him out in the scope. Saw does moving too, and deer out and about on my drive in and out. Night and day difference, but not that surprising....when all of a sudden ten times the vehicles are creeping up every gravel road, shutting car doors, and a blaze orange army invades the woods....like the deer don't freaking know what's up. Monday? Everything goes back to normal....occasional vehicle driving 55mph, no doors slamming, no one walking into the woods....deer know the coast is clear and are able to [cautiously] roam free again.

My brother and buddy tried to push a part of a large very popular Sunday during mid-day......long story....will tell it later....ends with my sister and her kids (8, 6, and 3yo), their 72yo grandpa (our dad) having a dude shoot a warning shot...two dudes following my sister down a path at gunpoint as she walked to her car worried because her 8yo daughter decided to stay back, and when they confronted her they told her, "There's nine guys in our group and they all want to kick your ass."

Luckily I was twenty miles away in my stand when this happened.

Then they blocked the road so my brother and our buddy couldn't get out, a father and son got out of their respective pickups, ran up to my brother's pickup like they were going to attack them....but then pussed out once they got out and were like, "fuggit let's dance." Once the old guy saw my brother step out, was a full head taller than him, and not fat as fukc, he called the sheriff.....said my brother had rammed his pickup, and was hysterical about hunter harassment. Dude is fukcing nuts.

Sheriff and DNR showed up....instantly recognized the offending party was both nuts and fukcing retards.....the only thing that resulted from them calling thr cops is members of their group getting charged with terroristic threats. My sister is a sweetheart and runs a daycare....her being unarmed and fearing for the safety of her kids isn't going to bode well for these fukcs.

So.....all in all.......

....Fairly typical MN opener.
