Males went back. Females got bonked to take the spawn for bait.

Very few people C&R where I was fishing. I got some strange looks releasing them and one old timer asked wtf I was doing. They gave me the nickname "The Conservationist".

Kind of weird as that is the opposite of what is done with Walleyes as the females are let go so they can reproduce year after year.
If you were a true conservationist you'd strip some eggs into a baggie and then let the females go spawn in a few days and then they'd return to Superior and return next spring.

That would be the ideal thing to do but it is not legal to strip eggs and release the fish. I don't like killing any steelhead but natural spawn out fishes other bait 10 to 1 on most rivers.

A lot of steelhead aren't successful at reproducing in the rivers I was fishing so I don't let it bother me too much. Releasing them is done for a shot at catching them when they are a lot bigger vs reproduction reasons. We do let the big hens go but I don't think it helps the population much. We just don't want to eat a large hen and don't want to kill a fish just for its eggs.
