I've never hunted private land but I've always heard the the hunter would generally offer to pay if they were willing.

Personally I wouldn't pay but if I had a good hunt I would give the guy some cash or like GW said a case of beer

Word is getting around SD that many guides aren't telling land owners they are guiding. When a land owner finds out that some out of state guide is getting $1500 a day for 10 clients to hunt a field they might get ticked.
I have only been asked 3 times in 11 years to pay a trespass fee.

I've been told that unless you know someone, finding a spot to hunt without a outfitter in Missouri is tough. This is because the geese are much more concentrated as compared to SD. Prime fields are leased at rates up to $4000/year. I got the impression that every field our outfitter hunted in MO had to be leased. I heard of outfitters charging up to $1500/day. I heard some hunters got 50+ geese on one of the days we hunted, with an outfitter that charged $2700/3 days. And I ran into a group at McDonalds that hunted with a local and got 50+.
When I went to SD with Chuck 3 years ago, we had no trouble getting on land at no cost.

I may go to ND for a day trip Sunday...I'm sick of being around home work is driving me fing nuts I'm going to snap on someone. Would just be fun to drive around and look, maybe do a little pass shooting. We'll see. I'm choosing ND because most likely that's where we will be decoy hunting and don't want to spend additional money on a SD license.

Other things to consider for a "Tip" to the landowner is a gift certif to a local resturaunt or a Cenex or similar local Coop.

We bring packages of wild rice and smoked salmon or lake trout to give to the farmers who let us hunt their land. They share the bounty's of their land so we like to share the bounties of ours.

Good luck to those going out this weekend! I'll be sitting on the ice staring at a flasher wishing I was laying in the mud watchin for whitey.
