But early reared birds molt migrate out, do they not? So really, is there any perfect option to the goose problem?

They transmigrate right before Labor Day. Those of us that have been on the hunting forums for years have all heard over the years, "I had geese feeding in a field for 10 days that I have permission for and 3 days before the Sept opener they are gone? What is up with that?"

So that is why the Aug season exists. To target locally raised birds (that are predating fields in the spring) before they transmigrate.

And the Feds give farmers predatation permits too, meaning they can shoot them with what ever means (rifle, shotguns, etc) but must let them lie where they fall.

It is the best that they can do to control the population.

Early goose season is a waste of time for most people. Corn is still up, beans are still up...unless you own a sod farm you are kinda out of luck...

Or you could instead hunt an oats field, or wheat field, or alfalfa field, or sweet corn field, or pasture...all of which we've killed geese off of over the past two Aug seasons, and none of which we owned.

They are thick in small grain right now. No silage yet but won't be long.
