Minnesota Waterfowl Migration and Hunting Report Nov 5th, 2015

Fri Nov 06, 2015 4:04 pm

Sorry fellas, a day late on this one.

Minnesota Waterfowl Migration and Hunting Report November 5, 2015

The following report is a compilation of state and federal wildlife manager reports and waterfowl surveys from across Minnesota. This is the 7th report for 2015.

Reports will be compiled weekly throughout the hunting season and should be available by Thursday afternoon each week. The Conservation Officer Report, available on the DNR web site, also contains information about waterfowl hunter success across the state.

General: 5 November 2015

Duck hunting remained slow across the state during the past week with the mild weather conditions. Most reports indicated no major changes or declines in duck numbers from the previous week. Most hunters are still shooting a mixed bag of both diving ducks and dabbling ducks. Some of the typical late season migrants (scaup, buffleheads, goldeneyes) are also now present in the state.

Canada goose abundance continues to increase slightly in most areas but large numbers of Canada geese remain north of the border.

Hunting pressure remains very low and should be extremely low over the next week with the firearms deer season opener.

The weather forecast calls for a weak cold front to move through the state today and tomorrow bringing some rain, cooler temperatures and NW winds. On the weekend, the forecast calls for a return to above average temperatures and south winds across the state into early next week. The long-term forecast calls for above average temperatures to continue with no major cold fronts.

See attached report for migration counts.

Encouraging numbers for Christina.

As time goes on and with proper water level management more and more ducks will pattern it. It's only had three to four year periods of clear water three times over the past four decades and even during those short periods lots of ducks would find it before it reverted back. It's exciting to think how many ducks it will attract and pull into MN after a decade plus of gin clear water and lower water levels.
