My plan is to break ice before the t-giving dinner tomorrow, let the wind work it over in the sun, then set decoys after the eats.

That should work, right?

Breaking ice wasn't bad at all today. 1/4" or so.

perfect for sliding BIG sheets under the other ice. I like it thick enough to get a sheet, if it just breaks into chunks I get pissy.

Lots of geese trying to keep water open...some decent sized lakes froze last night

I am surprised what did not freeze up solid this AM. For example Stieger Lake in Victoria is 85% open, only the cattail shallow areas were iced up.

With the warmer weather moving in, what is open will stay open for at least another 5 days which bodes well for the Central and South zone hunters.

Found birds, but nothing huntable in the time I had today. Didn't break ice, it wasn't near anywhere the birds were.

Awesome 10 minute goose hunt on Saturday morning, the roost was half frozen with several thousand honkers/snows. Worked in a 30 pack to the boot bag. We had geese landing all over the decoys. The light dusting of snow really help make the decoys stand out. Most deeper fishing lakes are still wide open with tons of geese and ducks around. The field hunting should get awesome now.

Small rivers near the metro are flowing like crazy. One of my favorite stretches that is usually frozen by now is just gushing and will likely be open thru the end of season.
