Low Level wetlands

Thu Nov 19, 2015 9:49 pm

Hello everyone,

second year duck hunting. Have buddies that have canoes and go hunting with on the weekends, but I was curious if we have any low level wetlands where I can set up decoys without having to use a canoe. I live in the Saint Paul area and am willing to travel. I know people will say scout and not want to give up their secret spots. If I can find generals areas that would be great.

Thanks

Best I can suggest starts about 3 hours west. Drive any US Hwy that heads that direction.

There might be river bottom access on MN River, but I've never hunted there

The river mostly sucks for hunting except one or two days in the season. Like now with it one of the last places open and mostly ice free.

Rivers are really high right now so be really careful to anyone doing that.

No such thing as shallow wetlands right now in the metro due to the 8"+ of rain this last month, Everything that I've seen is plum full right now, places that had 1' of water a month ago now have 4'.

For river bottoms was thinking more strong the Carver Unit @ MN Valley. Somw walk in areas around there, just no clue where they are.

They are deeper than you think, most use canoes...

The Mn wasn't to high but the flow rate was almost making the decoys into submarines.

Over this way they still are low. Now we just need 2-3 foot of ice this winter and good snow cover to get the much needed winter kill on a few I hunt.

Just going off the occasional guy I meet that says he walks in.....

Flood plain areas don't get as deep as they do wide. Same volume in a pot is deeper than same volume in a pan.

Give the kid a reason to explore. He should get wet feet long before he gets dead. Heck, he might even get a floating thing before he gets either.
