General spring waterfowl updates

Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:55 pm

Always love the spring return migration/season change....

Saw first mallard mating flight Tuesday this week, Ottertail River @ Fergus Falls.

Seen a couple pairs of what I thought were Woodrow's, but might have been merged. The duck eyes need to get back in shape.

Flying all over when it was 60's...I noticed they are hunkered down along open shorelines now. Gf has a fancy camera may try to get her out to use it this weekend

There was a big migration of waterfowl last night with the high south winds. This morning I was greeted to Sand Hill cranes, tons of Honkers and a bunch of Mallards in the Chanhassen area that were not present yesterday + a fair amount of Honkers above heading NW this morning. Spring is definitely here!

Swans, Canada's, mallards and goldies were buzzing around the river by the house. Goldies have been here all winter when water has been open. Swans arrived with the last warm spell. The others are fresh arrivals. Early push this year

Had a small flock of snows and blues fly over the house here in SE MN yesterday afternoon. Hope that's a good sign for my trip to SD later in the week!

Fresh Canadas in SW metro. Heard cranes, then had two fly over tree top high on stealth mode.

Love cranes, easy to hear but can be hard to spot since their sound carries so well.

Western/North western MN looks really dry around Fergus. I was surprise by that.
