The 2017/18 Waterfowl regs are out

Wed Aug 02, 2017 12:37 pm

The only major change is the bag limit for Pintails will drop to one per day, and the Black duck bag limit will be two per day. Additionally, next year’s spring light goose conservation order will begin Feb. 15, which is a little earlier than it’s opened in the past.

Quick review of the season dates;
The early September Canada goose season will run from Sept. 2-17.
The regular goose season runs Sept. 23 through Dec. 22 in the North Zone, Sept. 23 through Oct. 1, and Oct. 7 to Dec. 27 in the Central Zone, and Sept. 23 through Oct. 1, and Oct. 14 through Jan. 3 in the South Zone.

The duck season:
North Zone is Sept. 23 through Nov. 21
Central Zone Sept. 23 through Oct. 1, and Oct. 7 through Nov. 26
South Zone Sept. 23 through Oct. 1, and Oct. 14 through Dec. 3

Youth Waterfowl Day is Saturday, Sept. 9.

Funny thing about pintails and the one a day thing is I've seen more in the last two years than the 30 years before that combined. But with more small grains being planted everywhere and it being their got to place to nest I think their numbers are inaccurate on the counts. They are spread out more imo and we have seen bug increases on ones staying around my area and nesting.

Canada nesting pintails simply have no cover anymore to nest. The fallow land they had before is now all gone. I think alot of them now nest in the USA so that's why you see more. However their numbers are dismal.

My friends in Ca are pissed about the Pintail limits dropping. They've seen more than ever the last couple years. And, more Pintails than anything else.

And a LOT of the grazed grasslands have been plowed over too which does not at all help.

And they start to nest right away, many a nest is destroyed in April/May when planting traditional summer grains.

The best thing for Pintails farming wise is for the farmers to plant winter wheat. Let put it this way, If I had a 8 sections in ND, 1/4 of it would be in winter wheat which helps ALL the upland nesting ducks. Another 1/4 in CRP and the rest in regular summer crops. if farmers in ND, SD, MT, MB, SK, AB would even plant 20% of the total ag land in winter wheat, that is the same as grasslands for the nesting ducks.

^^^^^ and after not making money on that 8 sections you'd be tiling and planting corn/beans :-)

It sucks but the numbers aren't good. I know if California it's the main duck.
