2018 Spring Snow hunting

Tue Feb 27, 2018 9:37 am

It should be interesting these next month.

Eastern SD has at most 8" of snow. at most 10" in Eastern ND. Western ND has 4" at most, same for SE SK. So not a lot to stop them.

Another snow event this weekend for the metro Mn - but where they need to snow is in ND. Not to just to hold up the migration for a few days, but also for spring run off for the nesting ducks.
For this weekend Western ND will get 0-3", where as eastern ND can expect 4-8" this weekend - which has been the weather pattern all winter. 2-6" for eastern SD.

I think it'll be 2.5 weeks before SD sees any sizable Snow migration based on the weather forecast as cold through the next 10 days for SD

So is anyone getting geared up?

Anyone heading to MO or ArkieLand in the next week?

The last time we had good snow cover in SoDak, the birds seem to follow the Missouri River rather than the traditional routes. March is always an interesting weather month. With the current snow levels, it should make for a sloppy spring.

I 'm almost finished gearing up. No new stuff, just repair/repaint the old. I might try that new "Heavy X" tungsten load from Hevi-Shot.

There won't be much sheet water or mud this year. Lots can change but the Dakotas went into winter dry. When it thaws it will go into the ground. Keep an eye on this weekend, sound like mix of snow and rain, might miss the metro.

From the reports that I've read, SoDak has about 8 - 10 inches of snow in the East/Central area and heavy ice on most lakes and ponds. If the snow melts, it won't be going into the ground so soon. More rain/snow and it will be a mess.

I had a bunch of guys down in southern Missouri that had excellent hunting! Sounds like its been a hell of a year with the high juvy numbers. There best day was over 200. A group of friends are leaving tonight for southwest iowa and hunting thru the weekend. I hope to get out to SD or possibly ND if it works out.

Hoping to get after them in SD as soon possible and try to find them in areas not close to the MO River or Sand Lake.

I’ll chase the masses atleast one weekend but I’m gonna stalk the juvies after that.

The Dakotas may get that mythical March snow storm that can help replenish the wetlands

Likely to be wet snow, so maybe it will pick up 1+" ground water per 10" of snow.

Seen 2 flocks of snows in redwood county today. One was 20 in it the next was an easy 100 going down on the mn river. Truthfully I wasn't surprised a few wandered up this far because I went coyote hunting at 4am this morning and flock after flock of Canada's were coming through till just after sunrise.

Last night I had a lost Swan circling the lake I was fishing on. Also a gaggle of Canada's were overhead, all in the evening after sundown
