Can you answer this? Remington Hypersonic shells #2 shot you have a choice of 3in 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 load. They advertise 1700 fps second for both. I don't see this as possible. Or maybe they are just stating that it is a minimum of 1700 fps but to reach over 1700 fps is a stretch. Just thought somebody may have an explanation besides pure marketing hype. Thoughts?

What he said...

Just looked at the web page... a 2 stage primer, an XCELERATORWad, and you save 8" of lead!

If the best they come up with is that you "put more shot in the head and the neck".... which assumes you're can't hit at 40yards because you always shoot 8" behind.... by less expensive shells and figure out your lead.

I agree. I am not shooting them just saw them at the store and wondered how they could advertise that without throwing red flags in peoples brains. I would like to test those and see what real speed is as well as pattern test them but not at 24 a box.

I'm no scientist, but I think someone could use more, or a different burning powder to increase velocity with a higher payload.

I've even heard of people making their own ammo. But, I don't believe it.

Thanks for the info guys.

I have also heard that fps is only measured at the muzzle and the fps out 30 yards will be very different even between shells that have the same advertised fps at the muzzle. Just hear-say so I have no idea if there is any truth to that.

^^^^It's not hearsay, just wonkish. For it to make a physical difference you'd need to be a professional shooter. Generally the edge your average hunter gets is psychological and they don't test success in statistically meaningful ways, they just feel like it's a better gun/shell/etc.

Part of this is you work the plan that works for you. Time and money are too short to do empirical tests, and the variabilities between hunters from skill, size, coordination, etc. are too far apart for any lab testing to be meaningful in real world situations.

It's like two dweebs arguing whether natural Jedi crystals made a better lightsaber blade than synthetic Sith crystals..... leave the dweebs to pointless arguments and go kill something :-)

The only thing that matters to a hunter using steel is "speed kills".

The velocity really falls off on shotshells, especially steel shot. Here is the downrange velocities for various sizes of steel shot at different muzzle velocities.
