Rio Blue Steel.....Any Users?

Tue Sep 06, 2016 8:00 am

There appears to be a growing interest in it with the advertising and outdoor show sponsorships. Is it any good? Any actual users out there?

Never used it. But I'm thinking of ordering some of their bismuth loads for my old mod 12 16 gauge.

Its sucks. A few of us used it a few years ago. Now no one uses it, back to Estates, Rem sportsman steel and Federals for me.

I've always been a diehard federal steel guy but I tried out those fiocchi Dakota country loads last year and probably won't go back to feds.

I shot some of the fiocchis in SD last fall and they where OK. I patterned them this summer through a few diff guns and a handful of chokes, I won't be buying anymore.........

Plenty of people hate Kent, bitch about misfires, etc, etc.

I've shot them reliably for 10 years and it is my preferred shell for steel.

I'm a big fan of "fail quick and cheap". If you can pick up a box or two and run them on things that die in a short period of time you'll have your answer.

I said this before but I'll say it again.

I've patterned more load, gun and choke combos than I care to admit.
I've noticed a few common things doing this.
Shoot a more open choke, steel patterns tight.
Keep the speed at or under 1500 fps.
9 times out of 10 a extended choke will pattern better than a flush.
Drop a shot size or two. I now shoot a lot of 4's early and 3's mid season on out. 2's for geese.

^^^^^^ That.

The extended choke is interesting/new.

My first shell in is Kent Steel 3" #3. If I order: 1 1/4 oz loads. Seems 1 1/8 oz are more prevalent on retail shelf, guessing it's the speed war, 'cause you know, 140 fps....

X2 I've reached basically the same conclusions after patterning a lot of steel.

My go-to shell is Kent Silver Steel, 3", #3 with a Carlson, Mid-Range Extended choke tube.

Over years and years of shooting just about everything under the sun these 3 rounds are about as reliable/effective for the value as anything I've found also.... A few years back I thought I had to pay 27$ per box for Hevi-steel, hyper-sonic, etc.... It works, but not nearly twice as good for twice the price.

the only addition I'd throw in is the old-fashioned win supreme's.... I loved those also.

I didn't think I'd like the estates but picked up a few boxes for very cheap and was blown away. It's a fantastic shell for an affordable price.

oh and I pretty much shoot 4's exclusive for ducks and 2's for geese, out of a 15 year old patternmaster. I'll echo your observations
