Decoy Patterns

Fri Apr 04, 2014 2:44 pm

I am thinking about trying to make some foam decoys this summer. The direction I am leaning towards to make these decoy is to make a showbox like piece of foam and then cut out the decoy from there. I am struggling to find a pattern to trace the basic shape onto the foam. Does anyone know where I could get some sort of template for this? Any advice for a complete rookie decoy maker would also be appreciated. I am not looking to make anything real fancy but I would like use them in the fall. If they end up looking half way decent.

Why not buy a mold and use the bead foam like the Herter decoys were like? I think there is a place in IA that sells the mold. Maybe a more knowledgable person than I, can tell you who theCO is in IA.

go to: workingdecoys.net

They have forums dedicated to every type of decoy. Look up the "foamers" section. Ask your question on there and you will have more than enough information. Do some searches on the site first... likely it's all sitting there ready to roll.

Good luck!

My point is that other members can learn from any of us of what to do and not to do. :D

Dudduck.com is another good website, Some of the originals from working decoys moved over and created dedduck, Similiar issues at working decoys as with minnesotawaterfowler.
