Any one else have winter die off on their bushes/trees?

Thu May 15, 2014 3:44 pm

Several years ago I planted 4 burning bushes, and they are knee high and they look to be 90% dead. They had snow up to just about there tips for a good part of the winter, so I would have thought that the snow would have protected them somwhat. This winter, did any one else loose their burning bushes (they turn scarlet red in the fall)?

I did hear of people loosing pine trees, all brown on the needles and not greening up, due to the severe cold weather. A landscaper acquaintence looks to have lost his 12' spruce right in front of his office.

I'm curious of how wide spread of a problem it is.

I've have a couple of the burning bushes that survived the winter with no ill effects.

I would suggest that you try trimming yours way, way back and see what happens in the next few weeks. Sometimes cutting them back triggers new growth. If not, you will need to replace them. Good luck.

A couple of my younger pine trees are a little rough, but my neighbor's 12-14' arborvitaes are completely brown on the south exposed side.

Do you mean neighbors or that you lost yours too?

To be clear some of the lower branches are greening up, but the top 90% shows no sign of greening up

Only thing I lost over winter was to hungry rabbits.

The willows really got nailed by the rabbits when i was doing the MHN and Woodie box checks. Some had the bark chewed off 5' up--that is how much snow (4'+) there was in some places in the willow groves.

The Burning bushes are slowly coming back to life, about 50% foilage now.
My neighbors 6' high Arborvites are brown and dead.
A landscaper acquintance of mine lost his 12' H spruce at his office to winter kill.
