Traded one hobby for another today.

Traded a guy for a bow today and got rid of an old toy I never used anymore. Any tips on bow hunting much appreciated.

Don't be a trophy hunter without experience.

Attempt to kill, or at least draw, on every deer that comes within 30 yards so that if you blow a few opportunities, they won't all be on trophies.

Also, get good and practice at 10 -20 yards further than you would actually shoot when hunting. If you can reliably shoot practice arrows at 40-50 yards, then 30 will be "easy" in the heat of the moment.

Lots and lots of practice. Start close and work your way out once comfortable. Find a rythemn that is comfortable to you and be.consistent.

Far as hunting. Scout. Number one thing like everything else.

Concealment is huge whether on ground or in stand. Make sure you have something behind you for a backdrop so you don't stick out like sore thumb.

I don't buy into the whole scent loc craze. Just know how to play the wind.

Make quit and quiet enterances and exits to and from your stand.

I do not consider 14 year olds to be "women", I reserve that title for females of legal age, maybe you don't worry about such technicalities where you're from, just gotta jump on the first piece that's available. But that's not how we roll in Eden Prairie, we have options here. Good options. And lots of them.

Play the wind, scent lock doesn't work.
get enough stands where you can hunt in any wind direction.
good camo.
shooting a bow is like riding a bike, easy, but practice is good.
shoot the first deer that gets within range, no better confidence booster.

Spend as much time in the woods as possible...its very fun to watch the rut progress...and being out there that first day bucks are walking all over during daylight. I try to go out 5 nights a week at least between Oct 15th and the end of November. Most years it does seem like a light switch and you want to be out when the switch is flipped. Few years back I sat for 8 days in a row didn't see anything, on the 9th day had a nice 210 lb, 6.5 yr old deer come to 20 yards that I took. A lot of guys would probably take a break if they didn't see anything in 8 days, but I knew the switch was about to flip. Think I shot it around the 25th of October.
