Not when I shot one in the neck...flew away with an arrow hanging out. Buddies grandpa saw it feeding 3 days later in his yard.

My dad found a goose carcass one spring on his property while clearing some brush. Mostly all bones with a arrow stuck in it, no band on the leg or neck though.

I've heard an old timer who doesn't know any better call collars "targets."

That's pretty much what they are. I'd love it if they made it illegal to shoot a collared bird or just got rid of them altogether.

I also wonder if they started just putting on collars, instead of a leg band along with every collar, if that would discourage some of them being shot. It's pretty hard to put a collar on a lanyard so you can look cool.

I always assumed collars were ment to be targets. Keyword assumed, dont know that for sure or anything. It makes sense to me that banded birds are ment to be shot, no point in banding birds if their not shot and hopefully reported. I get the theory that neck collars can be seen with binoculars then reported, I doubt that the DNR or feds or whoever get as much data from birdwatchers as they do hunters. If I have a dozen honkers coming in and see a collar I know which one I'm shooting at first, same as I bet 99℅ of other guys. Unfortunately I haven't ever seen a collared goose while out hunting.
No excuse for shooting one with an arrow, in the summer and throwing it away, too bad some guys do that.
And F.F. are you in favor of making it illegal to shoot collared bears? Just wondering.
