E85 is usually 100-105 octane. Ethanol itself does not lower octane it actually raises it...but they mix even crappier gasoline with it to get to the octane they want.
You are right about less btu's though, that's why it uses more fuel(hence the reason I am putting in an aftermarket fuel pump, the stock one can not pump enough fuel above e30 to stop from going lean, the pump cannot flow enough fuel at that point)
