I'm sure some of you guys have been to devils duck hunting, I am thinking of heading up that way this fall with the boat. Anyone have a few pointers on where to stay? Where to drink? Can you launch a 16'+ boat from the washed out roads? Right now I'm think of saying in or around the Minnewauken area. Feel free to PM me.

Always stayed right in Devils lake at the Great American. They have a bird cleaning shack, freezers to put birds in, and a restaurant/bar/couple casino games to enjoy at night like a wheel and blackjack. Its not the best place ever but it kind of has everything we ever needed so if we are in Devils we stay there. Never stayed down in the Minnewauken area

The flooded roads change all the time depending on water level and wind/wave erosion. Something to keep in mind if you are just Google earth scouting right now.

McQuiods in Minnewauken has nice houses for rent. They have everything you will need and Aaron and Trish will take care of you. I've also stayed at the casino and they have pretty nice cabins for rent. Some roads you can launch from and others not.

If the water does not go up the hunting on Devils is not too good. You can check the water levels online and see how they compared to years past. You may want to bring a smaller boat in addition to your 16 footer so you can have more options than just Devils.

Be prepared to have a lot of competition.

^^^^^^ What do you mean by, if the water level doesn't go up, it wont be good hunting. if the water is lower, im sure you could still find some road to put the boat in?

Just got back from a week of fishing on Devils and the water is down a couple of feet the the last year or two. Still plenty of water and places to hunt, not to mention saw a lot of waterfowl.

Clarification- we have noticed the hunting on the big water (devils and surrounding) is not as good when the water level is stagnant or decreasing. Likely because there isn't as much food in those conditions. We have been making a trip or two to the Devils area for the last 10 years or so. The first several years the hunting on the back water of the big water was pretty darn good. These last several years when the water hasn't been going up there hasn't been much for birds around the big water. My point was, I would not go all the way out there with just a big boat. If the birds aren't on the big water your options may be limited. Lots of smaller water in the surrounding area is a not accessible with a large boat and walking in can be a pain in the ars or simply not doable.

The posting and pressure out there has got a little crazy. Too many articles in DU and on forums has finally caught up to it. There are still plenty of birds but finding unpressured birds in huntable areas can make for a frustrating trip with lots of windshield time. One of the hooligans in our group is now able to go to Canada so we will be heading north of the border this fall instead of ND.

Thanks guys. Our group put in for SD. If we don't get drawn, Devils Lake with boats is our backup plan for now as none of the group has been there. I've been in the area in the spring snow goose hunting and know what you mean about everything being posted. I'm kinda getting burnt out on the field hunting in ND. The amount of posted land and people with enclosed trailers is getting to be almost unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, I love a good field hunt but there's something about shooting waterfowl over water that I can't shake.

We would most likely field hunt Sodak late in the season. Boats only on Devils in ND if we don't get drawn in SD.
