Minnesota Waterfowl Migration and Hunting Report, Sept. 30, 2021
The following report is a compilation of state and federal wildlife manager reports
and waterfowl surveys from across Minnesota. This is the 3rd report for 2021.
Reports will be compiled weekly throughout the hunting season and should be
available by Thursday afternoon each week. The Conservation Officer Report,
available on the DNR web site, also contains information about waterfowl hunter
success across the state.
General: 30 September 2021
Duck hunters had a good opening weekend across the state. Most reports showed
higher success than last year and higher than recent years. Much of the harvest
was blue-winged teal, wood ducks, and mallards.
The number of ducks/hunter at different locations across the state on opening day
in 2021 compared to 2020 were: Lac qui Parle WMA (2.9 vs. 2.0); Swan Lake
(Nicollet county) (2.8 vs. 2.8); Thief Lake WMA (3.7 vs.3.4); Big White Oak (2.1
vs.1.5); Mud Goose WMA (3.5 vs. 2.1); Roseau WMA (2.1 vs. 3.0); Carlos Avery
WMA (2.2 vs.1.7); Canosia WMA (1.2 vs. 0.6).
Waterfowl stamp sales through opening weekend showed no change from last year
(66,000 in both 2021 and 2020). Goose permit sales for the early September season were also unchanged from last year
(28,000 each year).
More molt migrant geese have returned to Minnesota over the past week. Most small grain fields are harvested and some bean
and corn fields are being harvested so hunters with access to those fields should have good hunting success.
Wetland conditions remain very dry in northern Minnesota and moderately dry in most of the rest of the state. Hunter access to
many lakes remains a challenge and hunters should scout access areas prior to hunting.
Hunting on wild rice lakes will be
challenging all season due to abundant wild rice and difficult access.
Temperatures are expected to be well above average with highs in the 70s statewide this weekend. The extended forecast calls
for temperatures to remain well above average for the next 10 days.
