I know of a secret bass pond that is literally chalk full of 3-5 pound largemouth. The only sunfish in it are pumpkinseed and hybrid sunfish that are **** TINY. Makes no sense to me. Whole thing never gets deeper than 17 feet, average depth is much lower, never freezes out. Has tiny perch as well, but zero crappie.

Sick bass fishing tho.

It's all about having big fish.....if you want big panfish.....you start with small/balanced numbers of big pike, big walleyes....hell, big catfish do wonders for balancing out a lake.....

Yep we have been over this.

I just thought it was a bit ridiculous to compare a fish population in a private lake to a majority of other lakes in the state that are public when it comes to panfish size and fisherman's concern. I highly doubt anyone bitching about sunfish size structure are fishing private lakes.

Would be just as dumb as saying guys complain about too many small pike and never catching big ones. I can catch mid-30's off my dock on my private lake all day, try harder.

Speak of the devil.....look what my buddy sent me after fishing a very public, highly utilized lake, next to Mankato......total coincidence since the guy has never been on this site.......

Still plenty of big gills in the state. Populations can get big quick with the right amount of large predators present. Especially if people aren’t targeting keeping them. I’ve seen a dink factory turn around in a few years after the bass exploded.

Biggest gill I’ve caught was in a man made lake in Las Vegas. 13 inches. Legit dinner plate. The lake had huge cats too. Marshmallows were the hot bait for cats.

I’m a huge fan of hair jigs. I fish them summer and winter but primarily winter. I could shoot you a pm with a pic and some more details if interested.

I am not good with my hands with that type of stuff. I never was good at tying flies when I did it as a kid. I got an old timer that spins up hair jigs for me.

Yah dude send some pics and I’ll what I can get going. I’m really not great at this shit and I have very very little artistic ability but I can be mildly crafty when necessary.
