Huh? And so why does gas with ethanol have lower octane, less BTU per gal, and less MPG?

All octane is is a measure of the amount of compression a fuel can withstand. Higher octane fuels resist detonation better, it means nothing as far as fuel economy etc. Its a very common misconception that higher octanes mean better fuel mileage.

E85 is usually 100-105 octane. Ethanol itself does not lower octane it actually raises it...but they mix even crappier gasoline with it to get to the octane they want.

You are right about less btu's though, that's why it uses more fuel(hence the reason I am putting in an aftermarket fuel pump, the stock one can not pump enough fuel above e30 to stop from going lean, the pump cannot flow enough fuel at that point)
